Business finance experts know the way to keep their business profitable is to watch every cent that goes into and out of their company. The same holds true for personal finances; in order to be successful with your finances and thrive you must be aware of all of the funds that are going in (e.g., your paycheck) and all of the funds coming out, such as your bills.
A great way to track your finances is to create a spreadsheet that logs your monthly income and expenditures. Once all of your financial information is documented in one place you can see how your money is being spent and identify areas where you can save money.
Aside from the necessities, take a look at some of the unnecessary monthly expenditures such as subscriptions and memberships. Review each one and determine the amount of use you are currently getting from them. Be realistic. If you have a few magazine subscriptions but find that you aren’t really keeping up with reading them, then consider cancelling the subscriptions. If you’re paying monthly dues to a tanning salon or gym, but you’re not there often enough to justify the cost, then consider nixing the membership.
Another proactive step towards building your personal wealth is to take a look at your credit cards and see if you can make some adjustments to lower your bills. How?
Review your credit card statements and see if the interest is high. If so, contact customer service to see if the creditor is willing to lower the interest rate. If not, consider moving your balance to a credit card that has a lower interest rate. Just be careful about any promotional deals, as they typically expire within a year, and the advertised interest rate can skyrocket to something even higher than what you were previously paying.
Whatever measures you take to save cash, reviewing your finances on a monthly basis will give you increased awareness of where your money is going and what methods you need to take to conserve more of it.
